Athens – Chios
Gathering at the port of Piraeus and departure to Chios. Overnight on board.
Pyrgi – Mesta – Monastery of Agios Minas
Arrival at the port of Chios. Transfer to the hotel and settle in our rooms. Departure to visit the southern part of the island, the picturesque Mastichochoria – famous and unique in the world for the production of mastic. We continue to Pyrgi. You will be impressed by the unique architecture of the houses with black and white geometric patterns on the walls. We end our tour in the southern part of the island with the Mesta. The most important Christian monument of the village is Mikros Taxiarchis, where will visit on pilgrimage. The wooden temple that we find inside is a real work of art, whose construction took 33 years to complete.
The village is known for its medieval hamlet, which is characterized by the combined houses and one only entrance and exit for the whole village. Free time. Then we will visit the Monastery of Agios Minas, known of the massacre of Chios in 1822 when the Turks massacred over 2,500 live Chian Witnesses, including children. On the floor of the monastery can still be seen today traces of fire and blood. In special showcases held with reverence the bones of the Martyrs, which cause great thrill to visitors. Back at the hotel. Dinner. Overnight.
Nea Moni – Anavata
After our breakfast visit to the famous monastery of Nea Moni with the unique mosaics, works of Constantinopolitans hagiographers. We will admire remarkable relics, manuscripts and pictures. Also we will admire the famous temple of the Virgin, work of Evangelist Luke. Continue to Anavata with strong memories of the Ottoman era, we encounter an old preserved castle village, which today has only five inhabitants. Continue to Armolia, a village with a long tradition in pottery. Back to Chios town and the hotel. Dinner. Overnight.
Cathedral – Library of Korais – Agia Markella
After breakfast we will visit the Cathedral of Saints Minas, Victor and Vincent. Here ordained deacon St. Nektarios, whose vestments are kept inside the church. Then we visit Korais Library, one of the largest in Greece (135,000 volumes) and departure to the holy shrine of Saint Markella at Volissos, protector and patron Saint of Chios. We will worship the place of martyrdom of Saint Markella by his father, in 1500 AD Back to Chios and free time to explore the rich market of the picturesque city known for its mastic products, sweets, liqueurs and more.
Smyrni (optional)
After breakfast and with the necessary passports we pass by boat to Tsesme. Continue to Smyrni. Free time to browse the “colorful” bazaar of the city. Back in the afternoon in Chios and at the hotel. Lunch. Overnight.
Chios – Athens
Breakfast and departure to the port of Chios from where we will depart for Piraeus.
